Key Stage 3 – Mathematics
The WES Maths course uses a structured Maths scheme throughout supported by additional material which ensures a broad and balanced range of activities. Emphasis in the Numeracy Strategy in all the key stages is on extending number work and developing a range of mental methods for calculation.
At all stages children are encouraged to choose and make use of knowledge, skills and understanding being developed at the appropriate level, and to apply them to practical real-life problems as well as mathematical situations. Children begin to grasp mathematical language, using it to talk about their methods and explain their reasoning when solving problems.
From Year 7 the student’s knowledge and skills will be increasing. Some of the topics that will be covered:
Number and algebra
- order, add and subtract positive and negative numbers
- multiply and divide decimals by 10, 100 or 1000
- recognise multiples, factors and primes
- understand equivalent fractions, simplify and order
- use letters or symbols to represent unknown numbers or variables
- solve simple equations
- use mathematical formulae
- set theory – Venn diagrams, union and intersection
- recognise square numbers and square roots; cubes and cube roots
- generate terms of a sequence, given a rule
Shape, space and m easures
- recognise and use parallel lines and sums of angle at a point, on a straight line and in triangles
- find areas of rectangles and triangles
- recognise the properties of triangles and regular polygons
- measure angles of elevation
- make and interpret scale drawings
- plot co-ordinates
- understand reflection, rotation, translation
Handling data
- read and interpret scales on a range of measuring instruments
- probability and averages
- read and use graphs
- read 6-figure grid references
